Non-Shock of the Year: Arlen Specter (Officially) Becomes Democrat

To the shock and surprise of absolutely no one, Senator Arlen Specter of PA officially changed parties, making official what everyone had suspected for years... that he was, in fact, a Democrat.

"I have found myself increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy and more in line with the philosophy of the Democratic Party," he said at a news conference. He added, "I am not prepared to have my 29 year record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate," an allusion to the fact that Specter would very likely lose a party primary due to his increasingly liberal votes.

Specter was actually a Democrat until 1965, when he ran as a Republican for District Attorney in Philadelphia.
